One can is enough to cover approximately one square yard (0.83 square metres) of fabric. Restoring original colour may use less paint than changing colour. Materials with a texture, nap or pile will use more in relation to the surface area. Details such as piping and zippers can also take up more paint.
Paint is intended for use on absorbent material. Test the absorbency of your material by spraying a small area with water to see if it soaks in. If the water absorbs readily, the paint will too. If the water forms into beads on the surface of the material it is most likely unsuitable for painting. For best results, material should be dry, free of any grease and loose dirt. Before commencing your project, test the paint on an inconscpicuous area and check that it has absorbed and dried properly. After 72 hours, if the test patch is rubbed with a towel the towel should remain clean. Shake can well before using. Remove blue safety tab. Hold can 6"-8" away from project and begin to spray. Spray thin layers of paint to cover entire project. Rub paint into nooks and crannies. For even coverage, allow the first coat to dry completely (usually about half an hour) then reapply. Repeat until desired coverage is achieved. The ideal temperature for application is 70°F-90°F. Natural drying time will depend on the temperature and level of humidity. To speed the drying process, use a hairdryer. Allow 72 hours for paint to dry on furniture before use. When used on suitable material according to the instructions, after 72 hours the paint will not rub off or transfer to other fabric on contact. Paint is then permanent on fabric and machine washable. Hands wash clean with soap and water. For best results, use entire can in one application. To reuse can, you may need to clear the nozzle by turning can upside down and spraying momentarily, until clear gas appears. Store can upside down in water once opened for optimum gas preservation.
Make sure you are 100% happy with your test results before commencing your project. Do not use if paint has not absorbed and dried properly within 72 hours. Upholstery Spray® Fabric Paint is not entirely opaque when used for a complete colour change. Patterned fabrics may show through to some extent - creating a "self-pattern" effect in one colour - which looks good in itself (see half-painted sofa below). Solid colour is easily achieved when painting over a similar colour, such as with the seat upholstery in this convertible car (below). The original black had faded to grey but wth Upholstery Spray it was rejuvenated to a deep, solid black.
